Bachelor Social Work (Transnational)

Brief information overview

The aim of the transnational Bachelor's degree programme 'Social Work (Transnational)' is to enable students to act independently and professionally in the various fields of social work practice. This is based on scientific knowledge and scientific methods in the national and transnational context, which connects the Arab/Jordanian with the European/German area. The programme is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as a transnational educational project.

In particular, the programme aims to impart professional, social and personal skills. These enable students to identify, describe, analyze and explain social problems in both geographical, cultural and linguistic contexts, as well as to develop plans of action, implement them in practice and monitor their effectiveness.

The study location for semesters 1-4 is the German Jordanian University (GJU), in Amman, Jordan, and for semesters 5-7 the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS), in Würzburg, Germany. The language of instruction for semesters 1-4 is essentially English with German additions, and for semesters 5-7 it is basically German. Students who do not have the necessary knowledge of the German language at the beginning of their studies can acquire this knowledge during the pre-year and the first semesters. In this regard, GJU offers a coordinated language programme through its prestigious German Language Center.

The binational and demanding programme is considered to be a "hosted programme" in Jordan. Graduates acquire a German degree that is recognized in Jordan. They thus fulfil the academic requirements to practice their profession in Germany, Jordan and the entire Arab region. Immediately upon graduation, they are eligible for a residency to seek employment in Germany. The graduates also acquire access to a wide range of Master's degree programmes in social work and related disciplines, especially in Germany, Europe, the Anglo-Saxon countries, Jordan and worldwide.

The standard period of study is seven semesters. The Jordanian and most international school-leaving qualifications do not directly qualify for the degree programme; also, the required German language skills are usually lacking. For this reason, GJU sets up a pre-year's course that, if successfully passed, can be fully counted towards the duration of the degree. It also provides the German language skills required for the first admission level at B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). To avoid work overload, we recommend in this case to extend the regular study duration from a total of 7 semesters to 8 semesters.

This bachelor programme is part of the German Applied Transnational Education initiative between the THWS and GJU. You can access the Campusgate:Jordan here.
