Doctoral Representative

A doctorate is the award of the academic degree of doctor in a field of study. It is based on an independent scientific work, the dissertation, and an oral examination (viva voce, disputation or colloquium). The purpose of the doctorate is to demonstrate the ability to do in-depth scientific work using the example of working on a special field. A doctorate is usually a prerequisite for appointment to a university professorship.

The right to award doctorates in Germany currently lies with the universities (and their equivalent institutions of higher education). The individual federal states have different state-specific regulations. Information on doctoral opportunities for social work graduates has been compiled by the Doctoral Funding Section of the Society for Social Work (DGSA).
