"World Improvement Project" - Students agree not to use disposable cups anymore in future
As part of the "Lectures for Future", Prof. Dr. Christoph Bördlein spoke about the use of behavioural analysis methods to encourage people to behave in a more environmentally friendly way. This involves the targeted modification of the conditions under which environmentally friendly and harmful behaviour occurs. Christoph Bördlein reported on the "world improvement projects" he has carried out with students in recent years. The students succeeded in persuading the smokers standing in front of the university building in Münzstraße 12 to throw fewer cigarette butts on the sidewalk. Each cigarette butt that ends up in the waste water pollutes eight litres of water. The smokers were informed by posters and stickers on the ash buckets how much cigarette butts pollute the environment and asked to dispose of their cigarette butts in the ashtray - even if it is a little extra work. This actually led to a significant reduction in the number of cigarettes that were lying on the floor in front of the building on the evening of a lecture day. In Christoph Bördlein's lecture, the students were then able to try out another method for improving the world for themselves. The students were able - completely voluntarily - to sign a self-commitment not to use any more disposable coffee cups in the future. Disposable cups also have an enormous impact on the environment - and they are not recyclable. According to Bördlein, self-commitments act as a preliminary condition for later behaviour, similar to an alarm clock that you set in the evening to wake up in time in the morning. Those who signed the self-commitment received a reusable cup made of bamboo fibres as a small thank-you. At the same time, the students agreed to make their self-commitment public. This increases the effect of the measure. In a similar way, smokers are also advised to communicate their decision to stop smoking to other people in order to become more attached to their own words. 60 students signed the self-commitment:
