Studies
Size, diversity and interdisciplinarity offer students a range of degree programmes that covers the full spectrum of the respective subject area while at the same time allowing for differentiation and specialisation.
Scientifically grounded and at the same time application-oriented teaching as well as close cooperation with partners from the practical world ensure an optimal preparation for your career. The basis for this is our own application-oriented research and its transfer into the practical world.
The academic education provided by our bachelor's programme can be completed by a consecutive or advanced master’s degree in addition with doctoral studies offered in cooperation with other universities.
At the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences (FAS), we offer four bachelor’s and five master’s programmes.
We would like to cordially invite you to be open for everything studying entails. Go on an expedition through your field of study and dare to look beyond your own nose. Have the courage to ask open and clear questions. Discover new things - perhaps even during a semester abroad - and let yourself be fascinated by them. Have the courage to be curious in order to gain knowledge and insight. Look forward to getting to know new things.

Social Work (Transnational) (B. A.)
Bachelor of Social Work (Transnational)
Degree: Bachelor of Arts (B. A.)
Admission requirement(s): General admission requirements; English B2 at the beginning of the program, German B1 at the beginning of the program and B2 until completion of the 4th semester; no N.C.; no pre-study internship (see below)
Language of instruction: German and English
Standard period of study: 7 semesters (start: winter semester)
Place of study: Amman and Würzburg
Diploma Supplement: yes
Costs/study fees: yes (approx. 20,000 €)
The aim of the transnational bachelor program 'Social Work (Transnational)' is to enable students to act independently and professionally in the various fields of social work practice. This is done on the basis of scientific knowledge and scientific methods in the national and transnational context, which connects the Arab/Jordanian with the European/German area. The program is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as a transnational educational project.
The study program is intended to impart professional, social and personal competencies. These should enable students to identify, describe, analyze and explain social problems in both geographical, cultural and linguistic contexts, as well as to develop plans of action, put them into practice and check their effectiveness. The qualifications taught are based on the international Global Standards for Social Work Education and Training.
Course of Study
As a full-time program, the program comprises a standard study period of 7 semesters. For those who need to acquire German language skills parallel to their studies, it is recommended to extend the duration of studies to 8 semesters in order to avoid work overload. The 2nd semester is used for in-depth studies to introduce social work in the Jordanian context. The 7th semester is conducted as a practical study semester. During the first four semesters at GJU, students are taught in English and - if needed - learn German in parallel. The modules at the THWS are generally taught entirely in German. In many cases, this is done together with the students of the German-language B.A. Social Work.
Place of study and teaching language
The place of study in semesters 1-4 is the German Jordanian University (GJU), in Amman, Jordan, and in semesters 5-7 the Technische Hochschule Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS), in Würzburg, Germany. The language of instruction in semesters 1-4 is primarily English with German language amendments and in semesters 5-7 the courses will be taught generally German. Students who do not have the required German knowledge at the beginning of their studies can acquire it during the pre-year and the first semesters while studying. In this regard, the GJU offers a coordinated language program through its renowned German Language Center.
Fields of activity and occupation
The bachelor's degree program in Social Work Transnational prepares students for a wide range of activities: Child and youth welfare, services for women, mothers and families, support for older people and people with disabilities, work with people with migration experiences, combating educational disadvantage, and measures against unemployment and poverty. The demand for qualified social work professionals is high, both in Germany and in the Arab, European and international context. In fact, social work was the occupational group with the largest gap in skilled workers in Germany in 2021/2022. There were no suitable job seekers for 20,600 vacancies. The degree entitles students to stay in Germany to work.
Further Information
You can find more information on the general and program-specific admission requirements on the following pages:
- Persons with German university entrance qualification: University Service Studies.
- Persons with a foreign university entrance qualification: University Service International.
The prerequisite for admission to the Bachelor of Social Work (Transnational) program is proof of general university entrance qualification, subject-specific university entrance qualification, university of applied sciences entrance qualification or an entrance qualification for a bachelor's degree program at universities of applied sciences recognized as equivalent by law or by the competent state authority; successful participation in the pre-year at the GJU entitles the student to admission.
The degree program is not subject to admission restrictions.
Further admission requirements for the degree program are:
1. German skills: Students must provide evidence of the following German certificates:
- at the beginning of the study program (or by the end of the GJU pre-year ): at least B1 (CEFR)
- by the end of the 4th semester at the latest: at least B2 (CEFR)
(It is assumed that a language level of C1 is required to pass the German language modules, which is why the GJU language courses also aim at this level).
2. English skills: Students must provide evidence of an English certificate of at least B2 (TOEFL: at least 72) prior to the 1st semester (or prior to the GJU pre-year).
Here you can find the German and English certificates recognized at THWS. Passed exams at the GJU's German Language Center will be accepted as proof.
Knowledge of Arabic is an advantage for practical parts in the second semester, but not mandatory.

Master's programme Behavioral Counseling (M.A.)
Master’s programme Behavioral Counseling
Diploma: Master of Arts (M.A.)
Entrance Requirements: General admission requirements; min. one year professional experience in related field (see below)
Language of Instruction: German
Duration: 5 semesters while working (start: winter semester)
FHWS location: Würzburg
Diploma Supplement: yes
Tuition fees: € 1,750
Behavioral Counseling, an extra-occupational programme for advanced training, teaches and expands knowledge and skills to pursue and develop demanding counselling activities in mental health and educational facilities; beside taking a behavioural approach, it is also using behavioural methods. All skills taught are closely connected to the students’ daily practice: At first they are trained within the protected teaching environment, then transferred to actual practice under controlled conditions and finally, during the practical semester, implemented into the daily routine. Evaluation and supervision are of particular importance. Behavioural orientation is a forward-looking approach in mental health and educational practice; it takes into account intervention-related and socio-political developments, e.g. demands for basing findings on evidence and for professional quality management; moreover, it can be implemented into all mental health and educational counselling situations.
Programme Structure
The programme takes five semesters and is a combination of self study, contact periods (every two to three weeks mainly on Fridays and Saturdays) and practical periods. During the first semester, students gain deeper knowledge regarding normative aspects, methodical research and media science. During the second and third semester, students acquire skills in behaviour-oriented counselling of individuals and groups (preparing behavioural analyses; planning, carrying out and evaluating behaviour-oriented interventions). The fourth semester (practical semester) is used to perform supervised behavioural counselling in institutions/facilities. Students will now put their previously acquired skills and expertise into practice. The Master’s thesis will be written during the fifth semester.
Career Perspectives
After completing the programme, graduates will be enabled to take over responsible positions in all areas of mental health and educational counselling. This includes, among others, work with children/youth (e.g. child guidance), counselling within schools, clinical social work (e.g. psychiatric clinics), work with disabled persons or in geriatric institutions, with migrants (e.g. integration support), or counselling for special occasions (e.g. marriage counselling).

Entrance Requirements: General admission requirements; min. one year professional experience in related field (see below)
Language of Instruction: German
Duration: 4 semesters (start: winter semester)
FHWS location: Würzburg, Bad Kissingen
Diploma Supplement: yes
Tuition fees: € 3,000 per semester
This programme teaches the necessary competence to successfully cope with management tasks in the health business. Accordingly, business subjects take up a large part of the programme. Furthermore, theoretical basics as well as practical issues are taken into consideration. So some courses are taught by professionals from the Health Region Bäderland Bayerische Rhön. Therefore, a specialised health business academy Akademie für Gesundheitswirtschaft, which belongs to the innovation centre Röhn-Saale Gründer- und Innovationszentrum (RSG) in Bad Kissingen, helps with organisational issues. The programme’s target group are workers in health services who would like to improve their qualification while being on the job. This includes physicians, pharmacists, but also business administrators, healthcare manager, physical therapists, social education workers, and members of other academic professions in the social and healthcare sector. For physicians, there is the possibility of earning CME-Points.
Programme Structure
The programme takes four semesters of studying while working. A master’s thesis is written during the 4th semester. Every two or three weeks there is face-to-face teaching on Fridays and Saturdays. Depending on the module, there are written and/or oral exams, or graded presentations including a term paper. Bavarian school holidays are taken into account when face-to-face teaching dates are arranged.
Career Perspectives
The programme addresses workers in healthcare and in the health business who - while working - would like to earn an academic degree in the field of management to qualify themselves for the handling of appropriate and responsible tasks. The MBA, accordingly, qualifies for professional development in healthcare. Job prospects are offered, for example, by healthcare facilities and organisations like hospitals, surgeries, insurances, consulting firms, and associations. The MBA-programme, however, is also a suitable preparation when starting a business.

Certificate courses (German only)
Certificate Course Qualified Medical Practitioner
The certificate course offers a proven, trend-setting additional qualification for nursing staff, in particular with further training in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. Demanding, needs-based acute and intensive medical care is no longer possible without the deployment of specially trained nursing staff. The demand from politicians for qualified, non-physician specialists for delegated medical services is becoming increasingly louder. The cornerstones here are a comprehensive range of services and performance-related remuneration.
The certificate course offers the necessary tools for daily use in acute and intensive medical practice and is an excellent introduction to academic training. The curriculum is based on more than ten years of experience at the Cardiovascular Clinic Bad Neustadt a. d. Saale. Here the qualified medical practitioner is an indispensable part of the treatment team in the intensive care unit.

Certificate Course Specialist for Behavior Based Safety
Sound university knowledge for practice
Risky behaviour is the number one cause of accidents. To persuade people to behave safely, it is not enough to instruct them. Even pressure and the threat of sanctions do not prove to be permanently effective. Behavior Based Safety (BBS) is the application of behavioral principles to the field of occupational safety. BBS is regarded as the best-studied and most effective approach to improving behaviour. BBS is not a prefabricated concept. Anyone who understands the basic principles of BBS and knows how to apply them can successfully implement measures to change safety-relevant behaviour in a wide variety of situations. This certificate course enables graduates to independently develop individual, tailor-made measures to improve safe working behaviour. It includes both the scientific basics and the teaching of competences for the practical implementation of such measures. The curriculum incorporates the many years of experience of scientists and practitioners in the field of occupational safety.

Intellectual Property Certificate Course
The protection of intellectual property plays a prominent role in the development and marketing of innovative products. Entrepreneurial success or failure is often linked to the question of whether a sustainable protection strategy exists for one's own products and whether foreign intellectual property rights are protected at the same time.
The certificate course offers a comprehensive overview of the various intellectual property rights and enables participants to recognize the basic features of the ability and need for protection of innovations and intellectual achievements. Current and practical examples will also be used to develop the legal foundations of competition law (including misleading and comparative advertising), online law and the use of social media.
